Myofunctional Therapy for Adults
Many adults live in a state of chronic pain and discomfort, or simply in a state of surviving, instead of thriving. With aging comes many obstacles to maintain a state of thriving and oftentimes adults feel like their chronic issues are “normal” or that there is a lack of options to support their needs. Myofunctional Therapy can drastically improve quality of life and overall wellbeing and health.
Myofunctional disorders often present in adults due to untreated structural issues like atypical jaw growth, malocclusion, or tongue tie which impact functional performance for breathing, eating, speech, and sleep. Therapy programs can provide important muscular toning and strengthening to support functional outcomes in conjunction with other procedures, therapies, and/or oral devices.
Myofunctional therapy has become an increasingly common treatment for sleep apnea, as it provides a non-invasive and financially feasible option for patients that are commonly dismissed with a CPAP and not educated about other options and the severity of negative impacts that chronic sleep apnea has. Sleep apnea is a chronic presentation of upper airway collapse that occurs during sleep. Sleep apnea affects up to 7% of the population and increases individuals risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension, and abnormal glucose metabolism (Punjabi, 2008).
