Occupational Therapy small‑group programs to boost ocular‑motor, visual‑motor, and reflex integration skills that drive learning.
Ages: 5-12 (Kindergarten-5th grade, groups designed/scheduled by age)
In‑person sessions + virtual parent coaching
Why these intensives?
Strong reading, writing, and classroom learning depend on foundations that aren’t always obvious on a standard vision screening. When primitive reflexes remain active and ocular‑motor / visual‑motor systems are underdeveloped, kids often work harder than they should to sit, read, copy from the board, and organize written work. Our intensives target those root systems so your child can learn with less effort and more confidence.
We focus on:
- Reflex Integration: ATNR, STNR, TLR, Moro, Palmar, Spinal Galant, and others—through graded, playful movement patterns that build postural control and bilateral coordination.
- Ocular‑Motor Skills: Smooth pursuits, saccades, fixation, convergence, accommodation (flexibility), near‑point stamina.
- Visual‑Motor Integration & Perceptual Skills: Eye‑hand coordination, spacing, alignment, copying, figure‑ground, visual memory, and speed/accuracy for school tasks.
OT scope note: We do not diagnose eye disease or treat visual acuity. We build the motor and processing systems that support reading and writing and collaborate with developmental optometrists and educational specialist when appropriate.
How reflexes connect to development & academics
Primitive reflexes are early movement patterns that should down‑shift as the brain matures. When they linger, kids may show compensatory movement patterns that can interfere with other skill acquisition, such as:
- ATNR: head‑tilt while writing, poor midline crossing, letter reversals, difficulty copying across the page.
- STNR: slumped sitting, W‑sitting, trouble shifting gaze board↔paper, messy alignment.
- TLR: poor postural endurance at desk, fatigue with reading/writing.
- Moro/Startle: high reactivity to noise/light, difficulty settling for sustained attention. These patterns pull energy away from thinking and into staying stable, making academics feel harder than they should.
How ocular‑motor & visual‑motor skills impact schoolwork
Even with 20/20 acuity, kids can struggle if the eye movement system isn’t efficient:
- Saccades (quick jumps): skipping lines/words, losing place while reading.
- Pursuits (smooth tracking): difficulty tracking a moving line of print or ball; jerky eye movements.
- Convergence & Accommodation: eyes tire at near work; headaches; short reading stamina.
- Visual‑Motor Integration: poor spacing, uneven letter size, slow copying from the board, inaccurate cutting/drawing.
